WASHINGTON (AFP) - The
number of US unemployment claims rose by 1,000 in the week ended
March 20, to 339,000, the Labor Department (news - web sites)
revealed.
The figure was a bit worse than anticipated on Wall Street, where
economists were expecting a figure of 338,000.
The four-week moving average that economists say is a better measure
of the labor market's strength fell 3,000, to 341,500, from the
previous week's upwardly revised figure of 344,500.
The data are in line with the backdrop of a slowly improving US
labor market.
